Size: 37-48mm

An attractive, small, bright 'brown' butterfly with orange-brown patches on the upper wings and a large dark eye spot with two white dots on each forewing. Found in sunlit, rough grassland in the shelter of walls hedges and shrubs. The Gatekeeper is expanding north and can occur locally in large numbers especially in the Vale of York area
